Moredon Scientific Ltd

Mission Statement

The Moredun Foundation is a registered charity which was formed in 1920 by a group of farmers concerned for the welfare of their livestock and other animals.

Our mission statement has remained the same since our conception over eighty years ago - to improve animal health and welfare by reducing the burden of animal diseases. As well as raising money to fund research at it's own Moredun Research Institute the Foundation strives to improve the flow of information about animal health and welfare research from the laboratory to the people who would benefit most from it - the farmers and agriculturists.

The Moredun Foundation is the parent body of the Moredun Research Institute, Moredun Scientific Limited and Pentlands Science Park Limited, all of which are based at Pentlands Science Park itself, just 8 miles south of Edinburgh. In the years following the Foundation's inception major programmes of research have resulted in the prevention, treatment and increased understanding of many diseases. So much so that today, most veterinary surgeons and farmers regularly use vaccines or drugs that have either been research, developed or tested at Moredun.

Although originally formed to combat livestock disease problems in agriculture, Moredun's care through research now extends well beyond our traditional cattle and sheep programmes into the health and welfare requirements of red deer, horses, goats and wildlife.

Good research of course is only the beginning of the prevention and healing process. Once a discovery has been made, tested and secured, the message must be communicated to all who care for animals. Moredun's strength in effective technology transfer is world-renowned.

Talking Science - the Foundation hosts and takes part in many scientific and veterinary meetings, seminars and conferences around the world each year. This technology transfer is vital in enabling Moredun's advances to be shared with scientists from other research centres. Moredun staff also value the opportunity to work collaboratively with scientists in other areas.

Show-time - The Foundation travels the UK visiting agricultural shows and holding specialist animal health meetings for farmers and their vets, keeping them up to date with the latest animal health advances and feeding from their knowledge of the practical and on farm experiences.

Education - Moredun hosts visits throughout the year from colleges and agricultural groups eager to learn more about animal health research. We also hold Open Days and produce a wealth of information on a complete range of animal health matters.
